Every morning across the country, millions of people reach for a crossword before they reach for a second cup of coffee. It feels like harmless fun — a little pleasure between the day’s headlines and the day’s obligations. But a growing library of peer-reviewed research suggests that this small habit may be doing something remarkable: quietly building a reserve of brainpower that pays dividends decades later.

The 2.54-year gift
In 2011, researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine’s Bronx Aging Study published a study in the Journal of the International Neuropsychological Society that quietly changed how gerontologists talk about crosswords. They followed 488 initially healthy adults over an extended period, testing memory every 12 to 18 months. Among the 101 who eventually developed dementia, those who had reported doing crossword puzzles at the start of the study experienced accelerated memory decline an average of 2.54 years later than those who did not (Pillai et al., 2011).
Two and a half years. That’s not a rounding error — that’s holidays with your grandchildren, that’s finishing the memoir you started, that’s another anniversary in a home you recognize.
The researchers connected this to a concept called cognitive reserve: the idea that mental exercise across a lifetime builds up something like a savings account of brain function, one you can draw on when age or disease starts taking withdrawals. Once dementia does set in, this reserve doesn’t stop the disease — but it delays when its symptoms become obvious.
When crosswords beat computer games
For a long time, we didn’t know whether specific kinds of mental exercise mattered. Was it just about “using your brain”? Or did some activities work better than others? In 2022, a team from Columbia University and Duke University published a landmark randomized trial in NEJM Evidence that answered that question with surprising clarity.
They recruited 107 adults with mild cognitive impairment — the fragile transition state between healthy aging and dementia — and randomly assigned them to 78 weeks of either computerized crossword puzzles or the sort of colorful brain-training games you see in wellness ads. Both groups practiced under identical conditions.
The result: participants doing crossword puzzles showed superior improvement on the Alzheimer’s Disease Assessment Scale (ADAS-Cog) at both the 12-week and 78-week checkpoints, and their brain imaging showed less atrophy than the game-training group (Devanand et al., 2022; Columbia University Department of Psychiatry, 2022). Dr. Murali Doraiswamy, one of the study’s lead authors, called the findings “surprising and important as we look for ways to reduce the risk for Alzheimer’s.”
Why do crosswords beat glossy brain games? Researchers point to a specific quality of the crossword: it lights up multiple cognitive systems at once. Episodic memory, working memory, visuospatial reasoning, calculation, executive function, and — crucially — language networks, all firing together (Ferreira et al., 2015). A cognitive game tends to drill one narrow skill. A crossword makes your brain hold a party.
The bilingual bonus
Now here’s where things get exciting for a site like ours, because word games aren’t the only lifestyle habit linked to a stronger later brain. So is speaking a second language.
The most famous studies come from Dr. Ellen Bialystok, a cognitive scientist at York University in Toronto. In her seminal 2007 paper in Neuropsychologia, she and her colleagues examined records of 184 patients who had been diagnosed with dementia. Half were lifelong bilinguals, half spoke only one language. Everything else being equal — education level, occupation, cognitive test scores at diagnosis — the bilinguals had begun showing symptoms 4.1 years later than the monolinguals (Bialystok, Craik, & Freedman, 2007).
A follow-up study in 2014 examined 74 patients with mild cognitive impairment and 75 with Alzheimer’s disease. The delay in the bilingual group was 4.7 years for MCI and 7.3 years for Alzheimer’s (Bialystok et al., 2014). Independent researchers in Montreal reached similar conclusions when they replicated the work with a bilingual Canadian population — French-English speakers who were not immigrants (Chertkow et al., 2010).
Speaking two languages, it turns out, is like running a low-grade executive-function workout every waking hour. Your brain is constantly deciding which words belong to which language, suppressing one system while activating the other. That daily juggling appears to reinforce the very neural machinery that dementia attacks first.
The reassuring part? You don’t need to be a fluent bilingual since childhood to see benefits. Bialystok herself has said in interviews that “every little bit helps” and that people who take up a second language later in life still gain measurably. Practicing Spanish vocabulary in your kitchen, working through a bilingual crossword on a Wednesday, translating “gato” back and forth in your head — those are small deposits in the same cognitive reserve account.
The 46 percent number
If the individual studies feel abstract, consider the synthesis. A systematic review examined 22 population-based studies of cognitive lifestyle and dementia risk. Complex mental activities — reading, playing checkers, doing puzzles — were associated with a 46 percent reduction in overall dementia incidence across a median seven-year follow-up (referenced in Devanand et al., 2022).
Forty-six percent. There is no drug currently approved for dementia prevention that comes anywhere close to that number.
What this means for you (in plain terms)
You don’t need a laboratory to put this research into practice. What the science suggests, translated into small daily habits, looks something like this:
- Ten to fifteen minutes daily is enough to matter. Consistency beats intensity. A crossword with your morning coffee for a month will do more for you than a three-hour puzzle marathon on a rainy Sunday.
- Variety helps. Rotate between crosswords, word searches (our beloved sopa de letras), memory matching, and reading. Different games recruit different brain networks, and cognitive reserve seems to reward breadth.
- Play in more than one language if you can. Even beginner-level Spanish practice — five new words a week, a bilingual puzzle on Wednesdays — appears to feed the same neural systems that lifelong bilinguals benefit from. Every word counts.
- Social play beats solitary play. Puzzles solved with a grandchild, a friend, or a memory-care companion combine cognitive stimulation with the loneliness reduction that also protects against dementia (Livingston et al., 2020).
- Start today, not someday. The Bronx Aging Study participants who benefited didn’t take up crosswords as a “dementia prevention plan.” They simply did them because they enjoyed them, for years. The benefit was the accumulated effect of small, pleasurable choices.
The quiet promise
Here’s what we find most moving in this body of research: the interventions that show the strongest protective effects aren’t expensive medications or intimidating regimens. They are the kinds of things people already love. A puzzle with a hot drink. A conversation in a second language with an old friend. A cozy story before bed.
Word games don’t need to be marketed as medicine to matter. They just need to be there — warm and inviting and open in a browser tab — when you’re ready to sit down. Every stir of the pot is a small deposit in a future you can’t see yet.
So go ahead. Fill in the puzzle. Learn one more Spanish word. Read one more page. Your future self is quietly, gratefully, keeping the receipts. 🧠✨
